Where did the summer go? It’s the one season that never seems to last long enough. But before you hibernate your warm-weather wardrobe, here’s how to keep your favorite summer essentials in rotation long past Labor Day. Hint: all it takes is a few key pieces.
1. Sheer Tights
You showed off your gams all summer, so why stop now? You can still rock short shorts and mini skirts when there is a chill in the air by wearing tights underneath. It may be the oldest trick in the book, but this season, opt for a sheer rather than opaque pair to make the transition less obvious. If you’re still getting goose bumps, trade in denim shorts for leather or tweed.
2. Ankle Booties
Your sandals may not live to see another beach day this season, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to shop for knee-high boots, either. Ankle boots are the perfect fall shoe, as they go with everything from high-waisted shorts to skinny jeans. They even add a little edge to floral dresses. For those of you who aren’t ready yet to give up summer’s strappy sandal trend, there are cutaway ankle boot styles that will show some skin but cover your cold toes.
3. Floppy Hats
As much as we love the look of floppy hats in the summer, most days are just too hot to make it happen. Fall is the perfect time to add a topper to your ensemble, not least because your hair is sun-damaged. They add a bohemian feel to any outfit, and make a basic jeans-and-tee combo instantly chic. Felt is our fabric of choice, and either monochromatic or two-tone styles work. Just be sure not to match your hat to the rest of your outfit.

4. Printed Scarf
Fall is all about layering. Rather than donning a thick sweater and sweating when the temperature fluctuates, throw a scarf over a lightweight button-down. Since scarves are as important accessories as bags and boots, opt for a style that will not only keep you warm, but also accentuate your outfit. We’re talking colorful patterns and vintage prints. How you style it also matters. During the day, let an infinity scarf hang loosely around your neck or even tuck it into a low V-neck cardigan. But by night, tie a skinny, sequined style around your throat like a choker as an alternative to the statement necklace.
