With summer behind us, it’s time to prepare for the best season for fashion: fall. You can keep on wearing your jeans, tees and button ups, but you might need to top off your look with a lightweight fall jacket. There are styles for every taste. Here are our top picks.
The Denim Jacket
Channel your inner James Dean and throw on a denim jean jacket (the style is actually called the Trucker jacket, which is a bit of fashion trivia for you). If you go with a more worn-in denim, you’ll have a more casual look. Darker denim is more dressy and refined. To avoid the dreaded leisure suit vibe, just make sure your pants are a different material and color than your jacket.
The Baseball Jacket
Also called a “varsity” jacket, it can look exactly like the one you wore in high school, with the sleeves a different color than the rest of the jacket and your favorite sports team emblazoned on the front. Some designers use that cut as merely the inspiration and build on it, using more whimsical color schemes, or even a single color. This casual look is great with jeans and a tee.
The Leather Jacket
While you can get a leather jacket in the “trucker style,” we love the motorcycle cut. The round collar, and the clean, straight cut give the jacket an edge, even when you are wearing something more casual underneath. While black is classic, for fall we’d suggest brown, a more neutral color. Distressed looks are also very on trend. Leather jackets elevate even the most casual look but also look great over dressier attire.
The Pea Coat
This is for when fall turns crisp. A timeless style, with smart, fit tailoring that gives you a nice silhouette, the pea coat will instantly turn your outfit from drab to dashing. Current variations on this classic include midi-lengths, worn better on taller men, and versions that have toggle closures.
The best thing about jackets is that you can take last year’s attire and make it current. If you want to look pulled together this season, build up your fall jacket collection.
